Abstract
Los plásticos son materiales ampliamente utilizados por su resistencia, bajo costo y versatilidad, pero estas propiedades favorecen su persistencia ambiental. Este artículo revisa, desde un enfoque de divulgación científica, cómo la biotecnología microbiana y enzimática puede contribuir al estudio de su transformación. Se abordan las etapas de la biodegradación de plásticos, la búsqueda de microorganismos en ambientes contaminados, el papel de enzimas hidrolíticas y oxidativas y el uso de herramientas bioinformáticas para descubrir nuevas enzimas candidatas. Además, se integran trabajos desarrollados por el grupo en sitios contaminados con residuos plásticos en México y en la bioprospección computacional de enzimas con actividad potencial sobre el tereftalato de polietileno. Se muestra que la modificación biológica de plásticos es un proceso gradual y dependiente del material. Por lo tanto, estas aproximaciones deben entenderse como parte de estrategias complementarias de reducción, manejo, reciclaje y valorización sustentable de residuos en distintos contextos ambientales e industriales.
